Action/Adventure - Genre stories featuring a plot with much physical movement [chases, shoot outs, hiking etc]
Alternate Reality - Stories dealing with a plot that leads off from fandom. Please check out the thread on Alternate Reality for more details
Alternate Universe - Stories using characters from a fandom by giving the characters a whole new look and storyline, completely different from the actual fandom itself. Please check out the thread on Alternate Universe for more details
Angst - Genre; Describes an intense feeling of emotional strife; feeling of general discomfort or uneasiness
Author's Notes - Either a page or a few paragraphs describing the author's reasonings behind creating a fic. It's also where you'll find any information dealing on created characters
Avatar - Where the author inserts themselves into the story. See also Self Insert
B
Beast - Stories dealing with sexual relationships between humans and animals or usage of foreign objects in sexual tentions
Bestiality - Often stories dealing with humans transforming into an animal but retains human thoughts and emotions and becomes sexually with animals
Beta/Betareader - Deals with people proof reading a story prior to posting. In the real world it's known as an editor. The Betareader will check for mistakes and helps in making the story sound better
C
Canon - Are characters that are established from a TV show, movie, book etc
Challenge - Refers to ideas issued in a contest for other authors to get in on the fun. There's usually a special guidelines to follow
Continuation - A story that continues on after the fandom ends but it doesn't break away from the creator's thoughts
Crossover - Stories in which combines two or more fandoms into one [Gargoyles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles share the same spot light]
D
Death Fic - Deals with stories that have a major or minor canon characters are killed
Disclaimer - A few lines where an author will state ownership of characters and give credit to helpers. It's a helful hint to use so the creators won't feel offended. Can be found in the author's notes
Drabble - Stories of no more than 100 words
Drabblet - Stories up to 500 words, could be a poem
