Many people have asked this question to the point of having many different definitions for it. But no one really knows which definition is the right one. Many arguments and debates have been developed on the matter and no one can come up with a compromise. I hope by the time this document is complete, you may have an understanding to what Alternate Reality is.
I have done much research and spoken to many people on this topic and it all leads to the same conclusion on what Alternate Reality is all about.
What is Alternate Universe?
It basic terms alternate universe (AU) is a form of universe where nothing resembles the normal universe.
Are there any other names for Alternate Universe?
Yes. Alternate Universe can be depicted as being known as ‘Mirror Universe’ or ‘Opposite Universe’
What is a Mirror Universe (aka Alternate Universe)?
This refers to fanfiction that takes a character or characters out of their original venue and places them in another universe or in another time period. For example, changing the nature of the character (a character turns out to be an elf, sprite or other fey creature) or placing the characters in the wild west or on a space station, if that's not the characters' original environs. Also denoted as A/U
A Mirror Universe should not be confused with Parallel Universe, however they are similar. A Mirror Universe is can be called 'opposite' universe, in which the good guys are the bad guys, and the bad guys the good guys.
What causes Alternate Universe?
The cause of these type of worlds is when someone wants to give a total new life to the characters they are using, taking completely away from the original life of the series it comes from. As an example; it would be like taking all the characters of that one series and putting them all into high school together. Not everyone is going to be in school to begin with as there are enemies. For instance of this would be taking all the characters from Inuyasha and putting them all in school, even in the original there was only one character who was actually going to school.
Taking a character from the series and instead of making them what they were in the series, totally change their background but keep their hero work the same. It’s like taking Batman and instead of him being born into a wealthy family and living off his heritage, he steals the equipment to always keep up with his gadgets or perhaps instead of Batman being a man maybe it was a woman and she was called “Batwoman”, these are AUs. Another type of changing backgrounds is like taking the hero and instead of making ‘em a klutzy crybaby as what they are in the series; they become a slightly graceful person who just has typical trouble in school.
Another type is when you make the bad guys to good guys and good guys to bad guys. That is when taking all the good guys and having them wanting to destroy the world and the bad guys are there to protect the world. This is one story line that really pulls away from what the creator created. An example of this type would be like taking Batman and making him to be the one who wants to give Gotham City hell and the Joker is out to stop Batman from causing hell.
Another type would be like taking any or all the characters out of the series and adding in your own characters and totally disregarding what the creator created. And then all your characters actually live the lives of what the original series characters are suppose to live as. This would be like taking Peter Park (aka Spiderman) and giving him a new name and a new storyboard of how he becomes Spiderman.
