As said in “What makes a good fanfic” there was a spot in there that states about making a good crossover fic, well I would like elaborate more on ‘Good Crossover Fic’
You all know Crossovers is when an author takes 2 or more fandoms and bring them together into one story. It was also mentioned to be careful when choosing fandoms. I have to totally agree. If one takes two fandoms that have no way to really join together, it won’t make for a good story. The stories become pointless and readers will believe they were brought together because the author likes those fandoms. A good plot needs to be worked out in order for two fandoms to coexist.
There has been many crossovers that have been over done and as it has been said in 'what makes a good fanfic', one should try to expand their horizon and think of an unique crossover. When doing crossovers it’s best to try and place action pack series together and the drama/adventures together. The reason for this is because if you place a drama series with an action series, the drama will be overpowered. It would be like taking Simpsons and crossing it with Sailor Moon. That’s taking one group of people who are just normal people and shoving them in with a group of people who can destroy the Simpsons with a snap of the finger.
When coming up with a crossover fic, one should think of a good explanation of how to bring the fandoms together. It’s easier to blend the fandoms together if they are from the city.
Example: Sailor Moon/Inuyasha or Gargoyles/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sailor Moon and Inuyasha are both in Japan. Gargoyles and Ninja Turtles are both in New York City
It will also work easier if the fandoms have some sort culture similarities.
Example: Sailor Moon/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sailor Moon is in Japan and the Ninja Turtles have a Japanese background connection.
A type of crossover that is possible to do but can be quite difficult is time travel connections. If one wants to do a crossover that deals with time traveling, it's best to come up with a good story of why one fandom time traveled to the other.
Example: Star Trek/Sailor Moon. If this is to work then one has to come up with a very good storyline in how the two time periods can coexist.
Official crossovers have been happening for a very long time and even those crossovers have to be widely thought out to make sure it’s going to sound right and believable.
